already seated in front in the right corner. Even from the back, she looked familiar. I sat staring at her. She turned back and looked right at me with that smile again. I looked away, my heart in my hand. More people came and soon the hall was packed. I don’t remember what the movie was all about because I was too distracted by her presence.

The movie ended at 9.40 pm. This time I was encouraged by her constant assuring smile and so I was determined to meet her after the movie. I began walking slowly out of the hall. Near the exit, I felt a tap on my shoulder.

As I turned to see who it was, she said, “Hi Ayo!” and smiled at me again. I was taken aback by her boldness and was flattered rather than alarmed that she knew my name. I asked how and she said she had known me ever since I came to Ukhrul. She then told me that she liked me. Since then, we met almost every day till Awo Tarei intervened and asked me not to meet her again.”

“For how long you saw each other?” asked Oja Suiphy. “Almost a year” came the reply.

“Didn’t you suspect even once that she was not a human being?”

“No, I didn’t. But I remember one day while we were watching a movie, she said she had to go home. I told her to wait for a few more minutes as the movie was getting over soon. She insisted on leaving, so I came out to drop her. She headed towards the Viewland cemetery. All of a sudden, I got scared and asked her where she lived. She pointed towards the cemetery. When I looked, it was very dark and I couldn’t see a thing. I knew that if I dropped her, I would be too scared to come back alone. So I asked her to go by herself. Reluctantly, she agreed and went away towards the dark alley alone.”
